The Significance of Anand Karaj
The Anand Karaj is a unique ceremony in which a Sikh bride and groom make Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib the center of their lives.
The couple comes to Guru Sahib at the Gurdwara in order to obtain the Guru’s blessings for their marriage, instead of treating Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as a commodity to take to their desired location.
The couple first sits side by side, facing Guru Sahib rather than each other, and then does parikrama of Guru Sahib 4 times, while listening to each of the 4 Laavan, which provide guidance on the path to merge with Akal Purakh together. Other shabads sung during the ceremony also provide a roadmap on how to live life as a married couple.
Why Destination Weddings?
- People seek to use this occasion to show off their wealth and influence
- Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is seen as a prop rather than our living Guru
- Businesses like marriage palaces, resorts, wineries, commercial farmhouses, and caterers prey on those seeking a lavish Anand Karaj, to increase their profits
The Anand Karaj was never meant to be a commercialized spectacle. It is supposed to be a humble request by a couple, seeking the blessings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, as they come together to start their own family.
